District Commissioner Search Process

Your District Commissioner, Chris Lomas, ends his term on 31st July 2015. With this in mind, the process of finding a successor needs to begin.

The procedure has changed over the years and it is now a much more open process. To assist me I have asked George Lowe, our Deputy County Commissioner to bring together a small search group of members of the District to identify and submit to me their recommendations for consideration as a successor. To assist him, George will identify two non-uniformed adults, two uniformed adults and a younger adult member to create a search group of 6 people.

I now invite you personally to contribute to the search by submitting a nomination (or nominations) of persons whom you feel should be considered for this important voluntary appointment.

Nominations should be submitted, either using this form or by letter, in an envelope marked ‘Personal and Confidential-District Commissioner Nomination’ to: –

George Lowe, 54, Dunoon Close, Preston. PR2 3ZS
Email: – george.lowe@westlancsscouts.org.uk

Nominations should be received on or before 5th June 2015.

In order to ensure the widest possible consultation you are asked, in addition to submitting your own nomination, to circulate this request for nominations to all members of the District and Group Scout Councils within your area of responsibility. This may be verbally, by mail or via newsletters. Please note that in order to ensure confidentiality, and prevent building up false hopes, nominations should be submitted without approaching the individual concerned.

Self-nomination is acceptable, however please be aware that unsuccessful candidates will not be contacted to inform them of outcomes. Applications and nominations for individuals who are not currently members of the District are also welcomed.

I would therefore ask you to give serious consideration to people with whom you work in Scouting, at work, or in the wider community, and to identify anyone who you believe has the qualities to be your District Commissioner.  When considering a possible candidate please do not compare them against the current or any previous DC’s.   At this stage it is important to draw up a list with as wide a cross section of people as possible, so that the search group can begin the process of preparing a short list.

Finally may I remind you that as a recipient of this letter you are likely to be in the best position to know the needs of the District and potential candidates. Please play your part in ensuring that due consideration is given to all possible candidates by submitting your nomination. Thank you in anticipation of your support.

Yours sincerely,

Carl Hankinson

St George’s Day Celebration a huge success

Once again Chorley District Scouts came together this year to celebrate St George’s Day. This year, the celebration took part in Astley Park, with the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts parading through the park from Astley Hall, before taking part in activities on the park. The scouts also renewed their Scout promise together, an annual tradition.

The parade was enjoyed by Lindsay Hoyle MP and the Mayor and Mayoress of Chorley.

Join us in Ireland in 2014

Ireland1The Cub and Scout sections of Chorley District are holding a joint camp in the Summer of 2014 in Ireland. This is a great chance for the Cubs and Scouts to mix, and to get a flavour of international Scouting.

Find out more about the trip and download application forms and flyers from the Downloads Area.

Japanese Adventure Begins

Last weekend 5 young people from Chorley District were selected to join the West Lancs Scouts unit to the World Scout Jamboree in Japan in 2015.

The World Scout Jamboree is a world-wide Scout camp held every four years, and the young people from Chorley and West Lancs will join 3000 others from across the UK, and 30,000 from around the World to take part in the event, which is bigger than the Olympic Games!

The fundraising now begins in earnest as the young people start to raise the money they need to attend the event. But they know it’ll be the experience of a lifetime, living together with other young people from around the world with no borders or conflict, just friends celebrating what they have in common, starting with their membership of the Scouts.

Congratulations to them, we know they’ll do us proud representing Chorley.

Chorley take bronze at County Swimming Gala

We’re delighted to say that Chorley District came third in the County Swimming Gala – The Helme Shield – on Saturday night.

Congratulations to the whole team who represented us so proudly, and thanks to our support team of volunteers for organising and supporting our swimmers.

Yarrow Viking Explorer Scouts take to the water

Last week Yarrow Viking Explorers took to the water to have a go at canoeing and kayaking. Paddling form Burscough to Parbold on the Leeds to Liverpool canal, they took it in turns in the different boats as the sun slowly set behind them, making it a perfect evening.

They are now hoping to purchase some more kayaks so that they can get more people afloat at once, and then get some qualifications so they can go further afield.

Here’s some photos of their adventure:

New Scout Group in Buckshaw Village

Scouting is Coming to Buckshaw Village!

I’m delighted to say that a new Scout Group will be opening in Buckshaw Village in January 2013. We have recruited a Group Scout Leader and a Beaver Scout Leader, meaning we’ll be able to offer Scouting to at least 24 Beaver Scouts (aged 6-8) from January 2013.

We are now asking people to register their interest by e-mailing andy.marsden@westlancsscouts.org.uk. This can be as a parent of a young person aged between 6 and 25, who would like to join Scouting, or it could be adults who are interested in flexible volunteering opportunities in Scouting. Either way, we’d love to hear from you.

Are you in Buckshaw Village? Get in touch and let us know what you think and if you’d like to get involved in the adventure of Scouting!
